Facts and Static Plaques

Facts and static plaques are dull. They are read once, or maybe twice, and then forgotten. By engaging citizens and visitors to a community with stories of the community we will remember the characters and come back for more. The Web isn't about being low tech and high tech: it's about finding an appropriate solution which will engage members of the community. Like a good reality TV show, a community-focused Web site will use experts to help shape the stories of the community members. Only in rare instances is it appropriate for "the experts" to have the exclusive say on what a community's story ought to be.

Redesign

I am in the process of redesigning xtrinsic. It's a great project to work on while I need a break from my clients' work. I find the more I have on the go, and the more scheduled I am, the more I get done. The last overhaul of this Web site moved me towards a description of the process I employ with virtually all of my clients. Very few people have commented on whether or not this information is useful to them. What information is useful to you? Is a "portfolio" site enough? Or do you want more substance? Do you want to read updates? What about geeky tidbits (or maybe even industry news)? Please leave a comment, or drop me an email. I'd love to hear from you.

Soft Launch

A week or two ago we soft-launched the new Grey Bruce Cultural Network Web site. I am very pleased with how it's all coming together. Instead of waiting for the final design I've rolled out the site using a standard Drupal template. We've already had more than a few people submit their organization, venue, event and personal bios. It's fantastic to see everything coming together.

Very minor issues have included:

  • Old versions of Safari do not work well with TinyMCE. I have disabled TinyMCE by default since it is unfair to ask dial-up Internet users to download a new Web browser.
  • Adding an "event" for a show with multiple dates does not show the right time on each date. I have installed the Event Repeat module for play dates and other repeating events.

I'm looking forward to seeing how else the site will need to be tweaked. But for now it really does seem to be an intuitive and useful site as-is!
